Paintsville Lake State Park

Steep cliffs and wooded coves border the lake shoreline, offering 1,140 acres for boating, water skiing, and fishing. Anglers will find excellent opportunities to cast for walleye, bass, trout, and crappie.

The Dawkins Line Rail Trail is the largest rail-to-trail in the state and is open year-round, stretching 36 miles from Hagerhill in Johnson County to Evanston in Breathitt County. It is open to hikers, bikers, and horseback riders, and features 24 trestles and the 662-foot Gun Creek Tunnel in the first 25 miles up to Tip Top Tunnel. Unfortunately, Tip Top Tunnel is not open yet, so the Evanston side is only accessible from Breathitt County. Parking is available at Jenny’s Creek, Swamp Branch, Royalton, and Jane Beshear trailheads. With the completion of the final 11 miles, the entire trail is now open for all to enjoy.
